Minimum Number of Applications Required for On-the-Job Training

Category 40-Hour On-the-Job Training:
Minimum Number of Applications Required for Operators & Applicators

Candidate operators or applicators must complete a minimum of 40 hours of on-the-job practical training that is sufficient to allow the operator or applicator in training ‘to competently perform the functions associated with any applications’ that they are expected to be involved. A responsible pesticide applicator must be present during any part of the on-the-job training that requires the trainee to apply pesticides.

For applicator trainees, the 40 hour training must also include instruction on recognition of pests, their biology, and signs of infestation to ensure that they have an understanding of the pests to be controlled.

The minimum number of applications that must be witnessed or performed within the 40 hours of training by category are:

  • 1A Plant Agricultural Pest Control: 5
  • 1B Animal Agricultural Pest Control:
  • 2 Forest Pest Control: 2
  • 3A Landscaping: Ornamental Pest Control: 15
  • 3B Landscaping: Turf Pest Control: 15
  • 3C Landscaping: Interior Plantscaping: 5
  • 4 Seed Treatment: 2
  • 5 Aquatic Pest Control: 5
  • 6A General Vegetation Management: 10
  • 6B Right of Way: 5
  • 7A General & Household Pest Control: 15
  • 7B Termites & Other Wood-destroying Pests: 6
    *Not included for operators 
  • 7C Fumigation Pest Control: 2
    *Not included for operators 
  • 7D Food Manufacturing & Processing: 5
  • 7E Wood Preserving Pest Control: 2
  • 7F Antifoulants: 2
  • 8A General Public Health Pest Control: 15
  • 8B Mosquito Pest Control: 5
  • 8C Campground Pest Control: 5
  • 8D Cooling Tower Pest Control: 2
  • 8E Sewer Line Pest Control: 2
  • 8F Pet Groomer Pest Control: 15
  • 9 Regulatory Pest Control: 5
  • 10 Demonstration & Research: not required
  • 11 Aerial Application Pest Control: 10
    *Not included for operators
    **Exempt from OTJ training in other categories 
  • 12A Water Sanitization: 10
  • 12B Sterilization: 15
  • 13 Integrated Pest Management in Schools: not required
